For many of us, summer is synonymous with rosé…it seems to go with everything and, to coin an expression our mother uses a lot; ‘It’s very drinkable!’
Unfortunately, wines like rosé can have between 35-120 grams of sugar PER GLASS! A friend said recently – drinking a glass of wine is like eating a doughnut, and you wouldn’t dream of eating 3 doughnuts in a row would you?! Fair point. We all know sugar is bad for our bodies…but it’s important to remember that this includes our skin too. Sugar causes inflammation in the body and eating too much of it can cause premature ageing as well as aggravating acne and some other skin conditions.
So, with this in mind, we set about looking for alternative summer drinks, that won’t be so damaging for our skin – and we think we’ve found an absolute winner!
It’s a take on the classic margarita, using lime juice…and instead uses Watermelon which is full of antioxidants such as lycopene and also vitamin C and A which helps reduce these free radicals that can slow down the signs of ageing. Consuming plenty of Vitamin A can encourage growth of collagen and elastin cells that helps your skin stay firm and youthful.
We aren’t suggesting this cocktail is actually ‘good’ for you as such, but it’s naturally sweet, refreshing and incredibly quick and simple to make…one (or two of these ) gives you a buzz but you can rest safe in the knowledge that no doughnuts are being consumed in the process!!
1 1/4 cups watermelon juice (1 small ripe watermelon yields ~3-5 cups juice)
2 1/2 Tbsp lime juice
5 Tbsp silver tequila (5 Tbsp = 2 1/2 ounces) Pack a large blender full of cubed ripe watermelon (with or without seeds) and blend until you have a juice. One small watermelon should yield roughly 3-5 cups (720-1200 ml), so you will have leftover juice (as original recipe is written) for extra margaritas. You can choose to strain the juice through a fine mesh strainer to remove any seeds or pulp, but I didn’t find it necessary.
Line the rim of two serving glasses (amount as original recipe is written // adjust if altering batch size) with lime juice and sea salt (optional). Add ice and pour over margaritas. Best when fresh! Leftover watermelon juice will keep covered in the refrigerator up to 3 days. Sea salt (optional // for lining rim
